Herman Mashaba has quit after three years as the mayor of Johannesburg.
Minister Herman Mashaba resigned as the mayor Johannesburg on Monday. Mashaba cited Helen Zilles’s election as the Democratic Alliance’s federal council chairperson as one of his reasons for his decision. On Monday, Zille told eNCA that Mashaba had not spoken to her about his decision of resigning. Mashaba said his part of acceptance of the undertaking was his believe in Mmusi Maimane’s vision. He said he has no political inspirations and have subsequently turned down numerous requests to stand for leadership positions in the DA. He added that he cannot reconcile with a group of people who believe that race is irrelevant in the discussion of inequality and poverty in South Africa in 2019.
